Play by Play Saturday

Saturday was an eventful day.  Here’s a synopsis:

11 a.m. – My beau and I attended a wine and food “festival” at Florida Estates Winery in Land O’Lakes.  Festival is in quotes because it was more like a wine tasting, a barbeque vendor and a guy on a guitar.  Still, it was fun.  My favorite was the Plantation Blush, though the Casa Del Sol Strawberry Port was quite a treat.

Noon – We had tacos and margaritas at Pancho’s Villa.  This place is a gem, hidden in the heart of San Antonio.  It has the best Mexican food I’ve ever tried, and the toxically hot salsa at this place is unbeatable.

2:00 p.m. – We went home to play with the puppy.  We lounged around for a few hours before proceeding with our evening plans.

8:00 p.m. – We saw Satchmo: The Life and Times of Louis Armstrong at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.  The show was marvelous!  I recommend that all Satchmo fans see it while it’s in town.  My boyfriend and I are Louie Armstrong fans, so much that we named our pup after the man, so this performance was a real treat for us.

10:30 p.m. – Still in a jazzy mood, we headed to St. Pete to hang out at The Garden.  The Buster Cooper Quartet plays there every Saturday, and it’s worth the drive to hear good music and sip gin and tonics on the outdoor patio.

Midnight – We hit up The Bank, which wasn’t at all what I expected.  The new wave tunes were good, and the band in the lounge was decent, but the place was a dead zone.  The place is neat, with artwork hanging all over the walls and plenty of sitting room, so it was a shame to see so few people there.  Maybe Saturdays at The Bank will catch on sometime in the future.  My boyfriend and I played some free pool before heading to our next spot.

1 a.m. – We finished the night at The Martini Bar in BayWalk.  I’d never been there before, and it reminded me of The Blue Martini.  The music was, in my opinion, silly, and there were plenty of drunken people trying to dance to it.  With a circular bar, a dance floor and another large bar area, the place is beautiful.  Some of the staggering drunks, however, were not, like the guy who dropped his pants in front of us.

2 a.m. – We left The Martini Bar and headed to our final destination of the evening: home.  For a little while, we discussed going to The Groovy Mule in Tampa, but only because I would really like to go there one of these days.  We were pretty tired by then, so we called it a night.  We’re saving The Mule until next time.

One more word – My boyfriend and I saw The 40 Year-Old Virgin on Friday night, and it is hilarious.  It is much better than expected.  If you’re thinking about seeing it, trust me when I say it’s worth your $7.
