Shock. Total shock. That was the reaction in the audience when “American Idol” finalist Chris Daughtry - predicted by many to be the last singer standing - was booted off in Wednesday’s voting.
In the most competitive “Idol” race yet, Daughtry’s exit narrowed the contestants to three. The winner will be named May 24.
“Surprised?” Host Ryan Seacrest asked an unsmiling Daughtry, visibly caught off guard.
The 26-year-old rocker, drowned out by loud boos and screams of “No!” replied: “Yes.”
The other “Idols” stood speechless, mouths agape. Even the judges - usually unflappable - didn’t foresee Daughtry’s ouster: Simon Cowell’s jaw fell slack; Paula Abdul’s eyes filled with tears.

How do you feel about it?

I couldn’t believe it! I could have cried. I love American Idol but after this I just don’t think I can stomach watching the rest of the season. I don’t understand this voting system at all. Goodluck to Simon trying to make a star out of who is left. Taylor is interesting and Kat is a good singer but neither have the star quality Chris had.

I was shocked as well. I have to question the voting if everyone is in shock. I for one will definately buy his cd when it comes out. I pegged him for this years idol. How is Elliott still there?
Por (Melody Williams) on May 11, 2006
I’m not surprised - the audience had it right with the top votes being for Taylor and Elliott. Chris is strickly a rocker and everything he sang sounded like Creed. No variance in his performances. Not surprised at all.
Go Taylor…...
Por (Chip Carlton) on May 11, 2006
I agree with Laurie & Angie. I just am not interested in whether the other three make it or not.
Por (Valerie Manalang) on May 11, 2006
I wasn’t surprised at all. All he sings is rock, all the same music. Not surprised at all.
Por (mark barnard) on May 11, 2006
Chris was by far the best in this years show.
probably won’t make music that i would buy, but very talented and he has a star quality about him.
Kat messed up lyrics but is obviously a very beautiful girl, so i guess we no what the voting is really based on. i agree, how is Elliott still there?
Por (Denise King) on May 11, 2006
I was surprised that Chris was voted off. Even though he does sing more rock versions, he had a good voice. The other three have good voices, but I think Elliott has the best voice of the three. He might not be a looker, but there are plenty of other musicians out there that aren’t the best looking. I don’t think there has been a time that Elliott hasn’t performed a song that wasn’t good.
Por (Vicki Lamm) on May 11, 2006
I was absolutely floored! Elliott sings well, but lacks charisma, Kat, while talented, royally screwed up her performance. Unless there is a change in the way the voting takes place (i.e., you’re only allowed one vote per phone number), I will not be watching the popularity contest next year. I, too had picked Chris as this year’s winner.

My husband & I were a little surprised, but only because the judges seemed to prefer Chris’ style. He definitely got less ‘good performances’ the last couple of weeks. We also felt he has gotten a little smug about himself, and that doesn’t help his popularity image. Cat, Emmett, and Taylor are all great performers and truly appeal to the public. It will be really hard to choose the final ‘Idol’. We will be glued to the set the last couple weeks.
Por (Lynne Johnson) on May 11, 2006
I wa totally shocked. Chris has the best personality, Taylor/Elliot are my socond choices, the girl should go….Chris can sing all types of songs to me and nevr quivers on the delivery.
Por (Iris Evans) on May 11, 2006
Oops! I goofed with Emmett, when I meant Elliott. He & Katherine are really my favorites, so I actually hope one of them makes it through as ‘the Idol’. I voted for both.
Por (Charles Perkins) on May 11, 2006
People that watch American Idol should be called “American Idiots”. The contest is fixed. I called at least 100 times the other night to vote for my boy Chris. He’s the only contestant since Kelly Clarkson that had talent. All these other wanna be Idols and past contestants are nothing more then “American Fakers”. They don’t have the talent like Chris and Kelly.
Join me in protesting this fake contest by boycotting and not watching American Idol. We must end this now by getting this garbage off the air.
Chris ROCK ON!!!
Por (Terri Davis) on May 11, 2006
Shocked! Chris has been the best by far this season. I will buy his CD when it comes out. Let’s hope that American Idol has not become just a popularity contest for the cutest contestant. Kat can sing, but she has no personality or “STAR” quality and she has been truly boring to watch the last several weeks. Hopefully Taylor and Elliot will be the final two.

WHAT A CROCK ; SHOULD HAVE BEEN KATHERINE , DEFINITLY NOT CHRIS—HE ROCKS & LATELY SHE SUCKS ; BUT LOOKS GREAT & SHOULD NOT BE KEPT THERE BECAUSE SHES FEMALE & LOOKS GOOD
Por (Karrie Ann) on May 11, 2006
I really feel the voting is rigged. AI must have a way to turn on/off the lines as needed to sway the vote their way. It’s not “America voted…”, it’s “The producers decided…”. The radio, TV, blogs and message boards are all talking about how they were not able to get through on the lines. I normally hit redial for two hours and get through a hundred times but Tuesday nite, I was only able to vote 7 times in two hours. AI should be investigated to determine if they are using fraudulent and deceptive practices.
Por (Nancy Cobian) on May 11, 2006
I think the whole thing is a lot of crap. There are real issues out there, and everyone is worried about American Idol. I agree with Jeffrey, who gives a rat’s #####? Bring on football.
Por (Nancy Parrish) on May 11, 2006
I enjoy watching American Idol, though at times it disappoints. But isn’t that life…sometimes it’s great and sometimes it stinks but overall it is sweet… to be alive, to be an American and to have differences of opinion. Kelly was a breath of fresh air, Chris a great rocker,Taylor very talented but what makes him so great is the love he puts into what he does. Wouldn’t we all love to love doing something as much as he does? I say they all win no matter. And by the way, Charles P. “American Idiots”? I would be more inclined to think that phrase applies to people who watch some of the other “garbage” on TV. At least American Idol is for the most part good, clean fun. Can’t say that about much of anything else on the TV.
Por (Mike Loving) on May 11, 2006
Thank about it..Ryan Seacrest says America voted! Where’s the vote count. I want to see it. Have you ever wondered why they didn’t post the votes anywhere? Hmmmm, maybe it is fix thank about it!
Por (Kendra Inzana) on May 11, 2006
I am still in shock about the vote off last night!! Chris since day 1 has been the best singer. Katherine should of been voted off. She playes it safe with her slow songs and after watching her butcher elvis’s songs I definatly thought she was the one to go. Well atleast chris can go and sign with a record label on his own, just like Bo did last year. I agree that Chris is the best singer since kelly clarkson. And I wish him the best he will be a star
Por (LISA DAVIS) on May 11, 2006
I COULDN’T BELIEVE IT.THIS SHOW SUCKS.AND I WILL NOT WATCH THE REST OF THE SEASON.IT IS A FAKE.CHRIS IS BETTER THEN ANYONE ON THE SHOW.AND HE WILL BE BIGGER THEN ANY OF THEM.
Por (MARSHA DANIELS) on May 11, 2006
WHO CARES? ITS A TV SHOW NOTHING MORE AND EVERYONE IS UP IN ARMS OVER SOMETHING AS STUPID AS THIS?!!!!!I for one have never watched nor will I ever watch something as stupid as this show. There are far better things to do with your time then to cry over a show.
Por (B Nader) on May 11, 2006
Okay Okay, I have to admit that I was caught up in the American Idol show for a few years. But after the voting last night, I don’t think I want to watch it again. I need to decompress after a hard day at work, so good clean fun tv is great. I always questioned the voting, and after the results from the show last night, I have no doubt; the show is fixed. Too many people are upset, and too many people tried calling and could not get through to cast their vote for Chris. As for the people that don’t watch the show, but felt they had to post a negative comment about those of us that do watch the show, change the channel, and shut your pie holes!
Por (cyndi harvey) on May 11, 2006
I am in shock!! I love listening to Chris sing….... I will be buying his music, and so will my 13 yr old. I believe it was a fix, everyone wanted chris to win, and american idol wanted a “twist”. Now that was dumb, no one wants to watch anymore
